Chapter Eight

Despite the fact that they were once again on a perilous journey across town with Dunbar behind the wheel, Julian eased back into the cushy leather of the limo with a satisfied sigh. Things had gone even better at the tea than he’d hoped for.

His eyelids shuttered, he gazed across to the opposite seat, where McKinney stared out the window and slumped like a sulky child, her shoulders hunched, her arms crossed and her knees squeezed together so tightly you couldn’t have separated them with a crowbar. Her body language told all. She was seriously miffed.

And if she was just a bit jealous, too, he’d succeeded in paying her back for what he’d endured when he’d thought Mendenhall was in her bedroom for an amorous assignation. What it all meant in the long run, he didn’t have the slightest clue. Hopefully it had no deep meaning. For now, it was enough to have successfully retaliated.

He suppressed a chuckle and looked outside through the rain-dappled glass. It was late afternoon, overcast and drizzling, the streets full of rush-hour traffic and people cramming the sidewalks. But it was a cheerful scene, full of activity and bustle. It reminded him of Christmas in London.

“It was too short.”

Julian turned to Tilly. She was glaring at him, her green eyes snapping, her complexion radiant.

Excellent.

Julian pretended ignorance. “What was too short, McKinney? The tea? But the lecture starts at seven and I’ve a great many things to do beforehand—”

“No, her skirt! Her skirt was too short. A mature woman like her shouldn’t be wearing a skirt that barely covers her...her—”

“Careful,” he murmured with a ghost of a smile.

“Her assets.”

“You’re talking about Jamie, I assume?”

“No, I’m talking about Queen Elizabeth II! Of course I’m talking about Jamie Grisswold. Have you seen another female today wearing such a short skirt?”

Julian shook his head sadly. “Unfortunately no.”

Tilly threw up her hands. “You are something else, Rothwell,” she exclaimed. “How could you let that woman maul you like she did?”

“Hmm? Oh, you must be referring to the activity under the table.”

Tilly’s eyes narrowed. “You are talking about her playing footsie with you, aren’t you?”

Julian widened his eyes, all innocence. “Of course. What else?”

“Coming on a bit strong, wasn’t she?”

“Dear Aunt Tilly, what should I do?”

Tilly crossed her arms again. “Aunt Tilly would tell you she’s got no business fondling what’s not for sale. She’d tell you to sue her for sexual harassment,” she grumbled.

“If everyone sued Jamie Grisswold for sexual overtures, court dates would be backlogged till the middle of the next century.”

Tilly’s head jerked around. “What do you mean? Did you know she was like that?”

“I had heard something about her being flirtatious.”

“Flirtatious? That woman’s come-on was about as subtle as a—”

“Ten-ton lorry?”

“Going ninety miles per hour down the freeway!”

Julian laughed. “You’re exaggerating. But don’t worry, McKinney. She’s not my type.”

Tilly turned a delightful shade of fuchsia, like a particular rose he grew in the garden at Dorset. “I’m not worried. Why would I be worried, Rothwell? I was just offended to have to watch another woman flaunt herself like that.
